System Component FAQs

  • When do I need a charge controller?

Usually you will have a separate charge controller in an off-grid or battery backup system, most grid inter-tie inverters have a charge controller built into them.

  • How do I calculate my energy consumption?

Our Fundamentals Guide will help you understand some of the concepts and factors involved in determining your energy comsumption. Our Tools resource has what you need to determine your energy consumption and help with system planning.

  • Can I have battery back up with a grind inter-tie?

Yes! There are several systems where this is possible. Typically their operational efficiency is a little less then a strictly grind inter-tied system because they keep the charge on the batteries topped off as well as feed power back into the grid. However, these can be ideal installations at sites where the grid service is unreliable and/or there is a need for uninterrupted backup power.
